UPDATE 2: How To Get Thumbplay Working over 3G/4G after Sprint Update

December 27th, 2010 · 24 Comments · webfrost

Note that Sprint and Thumbplay are actively working on a fix, so the steps below may be unnecessary soon.

Michael (a Thumbplay employee) recently posted in the Thumbplay support site:

For any HTC EVO users who received the 3.70.651.1 update pushed in the last 1-2 weeks by Sprint – Thumbplay Music has become aware that this update has changed the Android platform to proxy all HTTP traffic on Sprint’s CDMA data network through a broken proxy which breaks Thumbplay Music and many other media streaming apps.

Google, HTC, & Sprint have been engaged regarding this issue but we do not have an ETA . In the meantime, Thumbplay Music will continue to function properly over wifi networks.

Alternatively, for those of you who have rooted phones or know the MSL (Master Subsidy Lock) code for your phone, you can also unset the “http pd proxy host” in your ##data# menu. Exactly how to do this or obtain the code is an exercise left to the customer.

To obtain the MSL, here is a thread on XDA-Developers which walks through how to do this with a tool called MSL Reader and CDMA Workshop.

If that looks daunting, you can use the advice below to call Sprint –

call Sprint, and say something to the affect that your phone won’t connect to the internet, and updating the data profile won’t help…or tell them pressing and holding the 1 doesn’t call voicemail…they will go through the proccess to fix it, which on the VM side is dialing ##{MSL CODE}# save that code…you’ll use it for step three [below]!

1) Dial ##3282#
2) Choose Edit Mode
3) Enter MSL
4) Choose Advanced
5) Change HTTP PD Proxy Port to: 0
6) Change HTTP PD Proxy Address to:

Good luck and let us know how it goes! This took me less than 10 minutes (granted I know my way around computers a bit) and Thumbplay started working immediately without even re-booting the HTC EVO!

The instructions work. But no need to lie to Sprint about why you need your MSL. I told the gal the truth: The OTA update caused several apps to stop functioning properly, and tech support said I needed the MSL in order to fix it. She gave it over, no questions asked!

It worked for me…just called Sprint tech support, and told them the OTA update caused some malfunctions, and asked for my MSL. No questions asked, she gave it to me. And it was as simple as it sounds to change. Rhapsody now plays downloaded playlist, just like it did before.

I was surprised it was so easy to get working, and why Sprint can’t issue a simple patch is beyond me.

Originally when I called Sprint tech support before I knew the technical details of the fix, the guy just told me to uninstall Thumbplay and install it again (which of course didn’t work), he didn’t have any further details on how to fix it.

I called them and tried to be honest and they said it was policy not to give out the MSL number and he was a real ass. Sooo….I called back and tried the lie bit and that didn’t work either. :(

See the post above regarding how to install MSL reader and stuff, took me less than ten minutes.

I was geting so frustrated with my phone, trying to get my music to work and having tons of problems (i was in the middle of trying out 3 different subscription music services to see what one I wanted , so that didn’t help matters… thinking that all 3 were terrible)

Followed the steps, works awesome now!

    Cool! Glad to help.

    By the way, Tony —

I’d be curious what you think of all the different subscription services.

On a whim I downloaded the trial of Thumbplay first and liked it, especially looking up all the old music I had in high school on cassette tape :-)

Then for due diligence sake I downloaded the trial of Rhapsody but it wasn’t very good, searches took forever. I don’t know if my experience with Rhapsody was unusual, but basically it just didn’t work nearly as well as Thumbplay. I did not try Rdio or anything else.

Worked perfectly, and immediately no re-boot. My Sprint Rep (from Denver) gave me the MSL with no fuss once I explained that an OTA update stopped online streaming. Even called back to make sure it worked.

Cool. I was at the Sprint store today due to battery issue (I think it was suicide, see other post). Although they were somewhat busy — I got there 5 minutes after they opened and there were already 3 people waiting ahead of me — the people were really polite and friendly.

I love You Jack!!!! I was so mad that it stopped working right when i signed up for the paid subscription. And Thumbplay said it was sprint’s fault I was livid. ran across you comment in the thumbplay app and immediately ran to see what you were talking about. Nonetheless I am pleased. I finally got my music paid. Now im not wasting 10 bucks a month. Thank you so much.

Does this void out warranty? I just spoke with Sprint (Advanced Tech Support) and he hadn’t heard anything pertaining to a fix.

  • 12 Tony // Jan 17, 2011 at 10:00 pm

Hey Jack, sorry for not responding sooner, I hadn’t come back to this site until today becuase I re-flashed a rom on my phone and had to fix that part again.

I ended up going with MOG for now at least. I really like the interface, and they let you download songs to your phone (although whenever I re-flash roms to it, i lose all my songs apparently… guess there’s no way to have it save stuff to the SD card and I’m not quite sure how to back it up otherwise…,

I’ve actually never heard of (until now) thumbplay, so I haven’t used it. Rhapsody, I can’t really remember how long searches took, but overall the mobile (and desktop) app just didn’t really do it for me… seemed kind of dated and clunky/messy . rdio was alright but MOG has a feature that’s like pandora where you can have it play , for example , Lil’ Wayne radio, and there’s a slider to let you choose if you want ALL songs by that artist, all the way to only similar artists on the other end of the spectrum.

I still have random issues with MOG though, such as it signing me out, or (i think this has something to do with being signed on already on the desktop version and trying to use the mobile one) it telling me i”m not signed in and making me re- sign in.

I really wish Zune would just do a mobile app for android… I had all my music downloaded through that, and when I cancelled my subscription, i lost a years worth of downloads (which was a LOT of songs, considering its unlimited and I was downloading albums and stuff)

AWESOME! You’re a life saver. Worked INSTANTLY on my EVO. Now I don’t need to cancel my Sirius subscription. I do feel a bit bad about reaming out the Sirius overseas callcenter operator now…

    >>Does this void out warranty? I just spoke with Sprint (Advanced Tech Support) and he hadn’t heard anything pertaining to a fix.<< Chad — no problem, it is how Sprint tech support normally goes in and changes stuff without rooting the phone, so this is normal. Will not void warrranty.

  • 15 Jack // Jan 20, 2011 at 7:41 pm

Evan — haha, I’m sure they are used to it.

  • 16 Jack // Jan 20, 2011 at 7:45 pm

Tony – ThumbPlay is awesome. I guess there were some issues with cancellations being difficult in the past, but I’m sure that’s sorted out and they won a lot of awards recently — http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thumbplay

Glad to hear it helped! Anyone know if there’s a complete list of applications that were affected?

  • 20 Evo Owner // Feb 15, 2011 at 5:20 pm
